Can you tell us why you chose this career?
I really enjoyed mathematics at high school and pursued actuarial science and statistics as my university majors. From delving into ‘Data mining’ in my honours’ year, I was enlightened by the integration of statistics, computer science and specific subject matter knowledge and wanted to be part of this process.
The career is also very relevant to the data-driven changes that are occurring within the world right now and provides a plethora of career-building opportunities.
What’s a typical day like in your job?
My typical day involves :
- quantitative analysis as a pre-requisite for data model changes
- ad-hoc data model changes based on product owner requests
- testing of data assets
- building data visualisations via dashboards
What are the some of the highlights and challenges of your role?
The highlights includes the conversion of business requirements into technical and development requirements. Creation of value from insights that the data provides.
How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your profession?
I follow data science blogs on social media and I am a Kaggle member. The business intelligence business unit at Sanlam is also focused on continuous development and training of newly available data-related technologies.
What do you enjoy doing for fun outside of the office?
I thoroughly enjoy hiking, gardening, reading and keeping up to date with demographic statistics.
