What degree did you study at university, Byron?
Can you tell us why you chose this career?
My love of mathematics and statistics led me down this career path and I have enjoyed the challenging and intellectually stimulating environment that it has provided.
What’s a typical day like in your job?
Usually, my day will involve some combination of research, coding (in either Python or Matlab), document writing, as well as meeting with traders and risk managers. Also, it involves analyzing and stress testing the performance of mathematical and statistical models used in the business, as well as collaborating with colleagues on various projects.
What are the some of the highlights and challenges of your role?
For somebody who enjoys mathematics, statistics and coding, my role provides me with many interesting problems to solve. The work I do is very diverse across different areas within the bank, so there is plenty of variety to keep me busy. The challenge with having such a large variety of work is in keeping up with all the latest academic, industry, and regulatory developments.
How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your profession?
I do so with plenty of reading, as well as occasionally attending conferences and seminars, and by networking with fellow Quants.
Thanks for sharing with us, Byron!
