Current Degree and University?

PhD in Applied Statistics, University of KwaZulu-Natal

What did you study at undergraduate level?

Bachelor of Science, majoring in Applied Mathematics and Statistics

Why did you choose this degree?

Mathematics was one of my favourite subjects at school, as well as my strongest subject, so I knew I wanted to go into something in that line.

Did you change degree / discipline choices at any point during your undergraduate studies? If so, please elaborate.

I initially intended on only majoring in Mathematics. However, after my first semester of Statistics, I decided to major in it too. In addition, after completing my undergraduate degree, I continued with a Bachelor of Science Honours in Statistics as I appreciated the real-world application and diversity of Statistics.

At what point did you decide to pursue your Master’s or PHD?

I thoroughly enjoyed doing my Honours project in Statistics. It was the first time working on a big research project throughout my University career and it was at this point that I decided to continue with a Master’s in Statistics.

What / who helped influence your decision?

All of the Statistics lecturers that taught me in undergrad as well as during my Honours year influenced my decision. Their passion and drive inspired me to further my studies in Statistics.

What benefits, in your opinion, have you gained from pursuing a Master’s or PHD qualification?

The skills that I have learnt while pursuing a Master’s and PhD qualification have been more than anything I had learnt in my Honours or undergraduate studies. Not only have I gained experience in my field of study, but I have also acquired other skills that will most certainly benefit me in my career. These include writing skills, communications skills, programming skills and research skills, among many others.
