What is your role at Sanlam?
Data Analyst at Sanlam Investments
Can you tell us why you chose this career?
I’ve always had a strong interest in statistics and data driven insights and with the emergence and consumption of Big Data across most major establishments, it is a quickly evolving field with a large scope and opportunities.
What’s a typical day like in your job?
We usually have some sort of daily stand up, a brief meeting at the beginning of the day to check our team’s progress and to determine what task to focus on. I am involved with various aspects of the SI Lab space including data modelling, using those models for reporting purposes such as in the form of a dashboard as well as documentation of our various initiatives.
What are the some of the highlights and challenges of your role?
Due to the nature of this field, there are various challenges that can be faced including ensuring the quality of data we use is reliable, making sure to account for all end user requirements when working on something as well as potential technical problems that arise which need to be fixed or addressed. I think the highlight of my particular job is that no two days are exactly the same as the job is very fluid and there usually is something that comes up to occupy your time and resources.
How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your profession?
I like reading up on the news especially due to my job being in an investment space so keeping up to date with how the world economy and markets are doing is always advantageous. In addition to that I like reading up as much as I can on how data driven initiatives are being implemented across the world across an array of different industries.
What do you enjoy doing for fun outside of the office?
I enjoy spending time with my friends, catching up on series and movies(I would consider myself a nerd), reading as well as playing Playstation.
