What degree did you study at university?
BSc Computer Science, University of the Western Cape
What is your role at Sanlam?
Data and Analytics Programme Trainee
Can you tell us why you chose this career?
I have always had a love for Mathematics, coupled with my Computer Science Degree, I wanted to find a career path that required an analytical mind to solve problems through the use of various technologies, so that I could expand my knowledge.
What’s a typical day like in your job?
That’s the great thing about my job, it’s always something new. From data modelling to fixing bugs, from developing scripts to automating a tedious process to pattern establishment. The amount of growth I have experienced in a few months at Sanlam has been mind blowing.
What are the some of the highlights and challenges of your role?
Highlights: Getting to work with industry giants, using technologies one could only dream of. Starting my career, straight out of varsity, and into a role like this. This is the kind of career you work towards achieving and I get to start out in it.
Challenges: Learning business acumen. Coming from a technical background I have never been exposed to any form of business in my degree so it has been a massive learning curve getting to know how business governs technology and data.
How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your profession?
Luckily we are always well informed by management regarding changes to come and we are usually provided with a thorough game plan on how to cope with changes. Sanlam is really great at helping you adapt to changes. Nothing is ever rushed, it really is a “No-man left behind” policy.
What do you enjoy doing for fun outside of the office?

- Spending time with my Fiancé (I know it’s quite low on the list but this is in no particular order)
