Jani Arangies, Data Analytics, Sanlam

What degree did you study at university?

Undergrad and Hons in Mathematical Science – Financial risk management at Stellenbosch University

What is your role at Sanlam?

Graduate in the Sanlam Data Analytics Graduate Programme (Junior Analyst)

Why did you choose this career?

I liked the variety of opportunities within data analytics. You have the option to work in multiple industries and various roles. The field is always evolving and changing and you get to learn and grow along with it.

What does your typical day entail?

Since I am part of a graduate programme my typical day involves a lot of learning and hands on training. It usually starts with a team meeting where we discuss what we need to do that day. Typically I engage a lot with business users to set up use cases for them to demo the new information governance tool we are in the process of rolling out to business.

What are the highlights and challenges of your role?

My biggest highlight is also my biggest challenge. I get to present my work back to business and see them engage with it and give feedback. I’m able to see the impact of my work and that’s very rewarding, but at the same time presenting your work can be very intimidating and having that confidence doesn’t come very naturally to me.

How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your field of work?

I turn to the internet to keep up to date. I watch videos on Youtube and follow Subreddits where people discuss what they are currently working on. I also have a network of colleagues who are always sharing new and interesting articles they’ve found.

What do you enjoy doing outside of the office?

I enjoy spending time with friend and family. I also like to have some time alone with a book or some music. Doing something creative also helps me manage any stress I might be carrying around.
