Marcio, Junior Sales Trader (Forex), ABSA

What degree did you study at university, Marcio?

Bachelor of Business Science (BBusSc) in Actuarial Science, at UCT, and a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Mathematical Finance.

Can you tell us why you chose this career?

I wanted to work in banking, instead of insurance, because things tend to move a lot faster in banking.

What’s a typical day like in your job?

As a Junior Sales Trader (Forex), at ABSA, this cover SAGBs, ILBs, repos / futures, SSA bonds, Eurobonds, and back-up for FX. My typical day includes reading the news and staying up to date with current events, analyzing the previous day’s trade stats, as well as trying to understand where the market is going, figuring out the themes and the big picture, and talking to clients.

What are the some of the highlights and challenges of your role?

Challenges include dealing with tough clients or being the “face” of the trade when things go wrong somewhere along the trade lifecycle. Also, understanding where the market is going and why it’s not moving as expected. Highlights are the same, but when things are going well! Also, the work hours can be challenging.

How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your profession?

Lots of reading and getting help from colleagues, as well as putting in the extra hours. Also, trying to get plenty of good sleep, so that you can be alert and sharp during the day.

What do you enjoy doing for fun outside of the office?

I try to run / gym, as well as often spending time with friends for drinks or movies. I try to read or listen to podcasts (or anything that helps with self-improvement).

Thanks for sharing with us, Marcio!
