What degree did you study at university?

Masters in Mathematical Sciences, University of Cape Town

Can you tell us why you chose this career? 

I needed a career that was dynamic, in which I will be able to utilise my mathematics and programming skills. Data Science was the career to pursue.

What’s a typical day like in your job?

My day to day work revolves around the use of machine learning, statistical approaches and other techniques to build new and enhance the existing models with the aim of risk mitigation, improve turn-around times and reduce cost. In this role I get the opportunity to meet and present to different stakeholders in the bank.

What are the some of the highlights and challenges of your role?

The most challenging part of this role is sourcing the right data to solve the problem at hand. Since I am working in the credit space, it is mandatory to adhere to rules and regulations when building models. You also need to keep yourself up to date with modern technologies in the data science field.

How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your profession?

New technologies are being developed every day, so you need to equip yourself with all necessary tools to solve current problems. I use different platforms such as Udemy, Analytics Vidhya and LinkedIn in order to stay relevant in this field.

What do you enjoy doing for fun outside of the office?

I enjoy spending time with my family and swimming.
