What degree did you study at university?

BCom. Economics and Finance

What is your role at Sanlam?

Graduate in the Data Analytics Academy

Why did you choose this career?

I have always wanted to pursue a career that would allow me to capitalize on my two areas of interest, which are finance and tech. This academy felt like the best opportunity for me to merge the two worlds.

What does your typical day entail?

A typical day for me involves, going through my emails in the morning, looking through my previous day’s work checklist to see which tasks I hadn’t managed to complete and why, daily team stand ups around 10 – 11, and then I continue with my day’s work until the end of the work day.

What are the highlights and challenges of your role?

Highlights: Every day, I get to learn a new and useful skill.

Challenges: Balancing the workloads associated with my everyday work and Academy projects, and also having time left over in the day to pursue my other interests.

How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your field of work?

I make use of a lot of online learning resources, primarily Edx, Coursera, Youtube, and Khan Academy.

Youtube being my favourite because you can always find a video that will explain a difficult task very easily, and it’s free.

What do you enjoy doing outside of the office?

I try to stay as active as people so I play basketball and go to the gym. Aside from this, I also like staying up to date with what’s happening in the financial markets, so I try and read news articles on a daily basis.
