Tasneem Joseph – Quantitative Analyst Trainee

What degree did you study at university?

BSc Honours in Mathematics, University of Johannesburg

What is your role at Nedbank?

2nd year Quantitative Analyst Trainee.

Can you tell us why you chose this career?

With my mathematically inclined background and interest in analytical thinking, being a Quant intrigued me and I wanted to find out what it entailed.

What’s a typical day like in your job?

I prefer having an early start to my day, so I would arrive at the office before 7am. A few of us would get some tea and then start to work. A few foosball breaks in between when we needed to clear our minds and without even realizing it, the day was over. Everyday differs, some are more based around meetings and other days I can get a lot of technical work done. I love my team and they are a great part of why I enjoy going to work.

What are the some of the highlights and challenges of your role?

I enjoy doing work that I know will have an impact, even if it is just a small one. Having the privilege to rotate has really allowed me to improve my knowledge and also grow as an individual. A big highlight is the people I work with and building relationships. I found it quite difficult to adapt to the ‘working world’ and finding where I fit in. Taking leave and trying to find a work-life balance was really challenging in the beginning, I am a lot more comfortable now.

How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your profession?

To have an open-mind and always willing to learn is something I have found to be essential. We are lucky enough to have many resources where we can educate ourselves such as Risk Business Schools and Udemy. The best way I find to keep up to date is to simply chat to people around me and ask as many questions as possible.

What do you enjoy doing for fun outside of the office?

I am a people’s person and I really enjoy spending time with my friends and family, even if it is something as simple as a braai. One of my other passions is bartending, so I love creating new drinks and teaching others what I know. I also run to keep fit and take part in races which I find to be very motivating. Food is something close to my heart as well and I love cooking as well as exploring new restaurants.
