What degree did you study at university?

MEng Chemical Engineering, University of Pretoria

Can you tell us why you chose this career?

My ideal career has always been something that merges my love for mathematics, problem solving and business. All of these characteristics  dovetail together in my current job at Standard Bank.

What’s a typical day like in your job?

My day normally starts with a brief meeting with my boss to discuss my projects in order to give him my progress and to get his input. These projects entail solving a business-related problem using data science techniques. The scope of the work includes but is not limited to:  pulling and cleaning data from sources like Hive; doing analysis using a platform like Pyspark; doing predictive modeling with the data using statistical techniques; presenting my findings. On some days I spend time writing scripts to automate repetitive tasks.

What are the some of the highlights and challenges of your role?

A major challenge when I started was that my coding skills were almost non-existent and this is an essential tool required for the job. I knew I had my work cut out for me. Through some self-learning and support from Standard Bank, I worked on improving these skills and this has made my job a lot easier.

How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your profession?

In this field new software and techniques to solve problems are always being developed. To keep abreast with these changes, I always visit a website called: Towards Data Science and I do self-learning on LinkedIn Learning which we get free access to via the bank.

What do you enjoy doing for fun outside of the office?

I enjoy being active, so I try to go to the gym about 3-4 times a week.  Occasionally I go hiking with my wife.
