What degree did you study at university?
BSc Applied Statistics and Economics, UCT
What is your role at Sanlam?
Sanlam Data Academy Trainee
Can you tell us why you chose this career?
I had very little understanding of data science, its uses and how to manage it. This sparked a curiosity in me to explore this further. Paired with my coding experience in a few programming languages as well as the opportunity that exists in this space, I believe that this is a great fit for me.
What’s a typical day like in your job?
My typical work day is roughly split up as follows:
65% – data management (querying, processing and testing)
20% – exploring the data and driving insights
10% – reporting on these insights
5% – Responding to emails and catching up with colleagues
What are the some of the highlights and challenges of your role?
– Data in its raw state only stores facts. To be able to manipulate and model data to draw insights and answer business problems is very exciting and interesting. There is always a new problem to solve with data.
– Throughout school, I underestimated the value of making use of soft-skills and working in teams. The world of data encompasses engaging with stakeholders regularly, therefore working on my soft-skills is different but good learning for me.
– Since data roles are so vast, I struggle to identify which role would be best for me. However, there is an opportunity for me to explore the world of data until I find my best fit.
How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your profession?
I believe upskilling is very important. I have done some short courses on Udemy and Coursera to keep up to date with changes. I have a few websites bookmarked which relate to specific data tasks. Google is also a great source of information when I am stuck on a problem.
What do you enjoy doing for fun outside of the office?
I enjoy jogging, sewing clothes, doing hair and engaging in outdoor activities.
