Can you tell us why you chose this career?
I realized the power of data analytics when I became exposed to large datasets and I could see trends/ patterns that was valuable for machine maintenance and energy savings. I realized that the trends of the data could answer much more compared to using models built on many assumptions. This made me interested in this career and I felt like there is so many aspects that you are not likely to become bored.
What’s a typical day like in your job?
It basically entails working in a team to deliver a project, the roles changes depending on the requirements and the capacity of the team.
I am part of the Sanlam Data Academy and my role is therefore not fixed, I am rotated to do a different workload every few month to handle different tasks related to data as a whole.
I am currently in a rotation where I’m evaluating data quality and working on a software to manage master/reference data.
What are the some of the highlights and challenges of your role?
To be honest, the highlights are the challenges. I enjoy the challenges that I face on a daily basis and it is really satisfying that there are so many different challenges that allows me to think of different solutions. One of the biggest challenges is to not over complicate tasks when the requirements are simple. I have learned to communicate and to continuously verify that what I am doing is in line with the expected outcome.
How do you keep up to date with all the changes in your profession?
The company provides training on existing and new technologies which helps me to stay up to date to a certain extent. We are also allowed to access/sign up for courses for free with the company license which is also another way to stay up to date.
What do you enjoy doing for fun outside of the office?
I enjoy spending time with family and friends, playing video games, watching series and following practical DIY projects.
